DETROIT — A 19-year-old man who arrested after police said he randomly shot four people on Detroit's west side Sunday morning had no criminal history, officials said during a Monday afternoon news conference. Officials arrested the shooter without incident in the area of Pembroke and Livernois streets after Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said "somebody close" to the shooter sent in a tip to Detroit Police. "Yesterday we called on family and those close to this suspect to provide us information, and it was based on tips from the community that allowed us to take this individual into custody without any incident," Duggan said. "That's what happens when you have the police, including our state and federal partners, and the community working together. It was a tremendous show of unity." Detroit Police Chief James White declined to speculate on a possible motive behind the shooting, but said the shooter may have been dealing with mental illness. He also said officers found a firearm and ballistics testing showed that it was the weapon used in all four shootings. White did, however, he did provide a timeline of events: First shooting: approximately 4:45 a.m. in the area of 7 mile and Wyoming. The shooter was unprovoked and shot a 28-year-old man multiple times, killing him. There was no 911 call.Second shooting: approximately 5:15 a.m. in area of Margareta and Wyoming. A woman in her 40s was found dead after a 911 call. Third shooting: approximately 6:53 a.m. on the 19800 block of Livernois. The shooter was unprovoked and fatally shot a woman in her 40s. Officers responded to a 911 call of shots fired.Fourth shooting: approximately 7:10 a.m. on the 19200 block of Pennington. The shooter was unprovoked and shot an 80-year-old man in the leg. He was taken to the hospital and is recovering. "I can't stress enough the importance of calling the police when something illegal happens," White said. "We need to make the proposition of committing a crime risky for the perpetrator."
