Description

We live in a world defined by data. As such, it is crucial that we begin to understand the ways in which we can provide opportunities for even our youngest learners in K-12 to learn about and work with data. To bring visibility to the need for data science education at the K-12 level, the Board on Science Education in collaboration with the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics, the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, and the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a public workshop. The workshop will explore the available research on the following board topics: What should be the goals and outcomes of data science and data fluency? What tools and datasets are needed to support learners in acquiring competencies in data science? What should the learning experiences look like? How can learning with data be meaningfully integrated into other K-12 subjects? What additional research is needed?Day 1: September 13, 2022 | 10:00 am - 4:30 pm EDT Day 2: September 14, 2022 | 10:00 am - 3:30 pm EDT In advance of the workshop, please submit examples of challenge educators face when working to enact Data Science activities, OR example that reflect successful real-world application of Data Science with youth, OR example of an existing software/tool/technology that's been used and could be adopted to supplement Data Science learning. Selected examples will be shared on the NASEM website and via slide show during a break in the workshop. Please visit our event website for the most up-to-date information.
