As many as 10,000 white men and boys descended on downtown Atlanta on September 22, 1906. Their targets were Black people, Black communities, and Black businesses. At least 25 Black men and women were lynched over the four days of terror from downtown Atlanta to East Point, though some accounts recorded up to 100 deaths.
On September 23, Zeb Long was arrested for incendiary comments about the way white people were treating black people. The next morning, a mob of 50 white men broke into the jail and abducted Mr. Long. He was found hanging from a tree later in the day.
