Neighbors, We have a crisis going on with one of our neighborhood cats. We have a black cat that has been roaming around Homestead Park for years. I’ve posted ring videos trying desperately to find his owner and no one has ever come forward. I don’t know if someone moved and didn’t take him, or maybe he’s a runaway. I’ve looked at countless lost pet ads and websites over the last couple of years. Denise, another HSP neighbor took another one of our other neighborhood cats (Maurice) under her wing for the past few years. All of a sudden, this black cat, who she has named Martino, just started showing up in her backyard every day & night. Denise has done so much to keep these two well fed & hydrated and is probably a huge reason they are still alive. She has a doggie door and both of them can come and go as they please. Maurice is very friendly. He will rub up on you, loves to snuggle and chats up a storm. Martino on the other hand, keeps his distance. Usually outside the glass door. I’m pretty sure he is either feral or hasn’t had human contact in a very long time. Denise asked if I could feed them in the mornings while she was out of town this past week for work. I noticed a huge open wound on this side of Martino’s neck. The hair is completely gone in that area. Maybe he got into a fight with a raccoon? I don’t know. I tried to take a couple of photos to send to my vet & ask her what the next step would be. I asked what her protocol was for a feral cat. Here is her response •••••••• Good Morning, That does look bad. If he is sweet we can try to keep him in bathroom, feed him some gabapentin, & once he is sleepy we can check the wound /skin and administer antibiotic injection that's good for a couple of weeks. If he doesn't let anybody handle him then we can dispense antibiotics and that can be mixed with his food. Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
