FCAO was first started in 1996 by passionate foster parents who wanted to make a profound impact in the lives of foster families in Oklahoma. In 2017, FCAO became an official 501(c)3 and started rehabilitating the treatment and support needed for foster and adoptive families. In the last several years, FCAO has continued these efforts and has developed respectful and impactful relationships with our state and other child welfare partners to best advocate and support foster families across Oklahoma. Our mission is to to improve the lives of children by empowering foster and adoptive families through support, connection, and advocacy. For more information go to www.fcao.org Where does your money go? Many people are doing exceptional work in the child welfare space, but we have determined that the support needed for foster and adoptive families takes a much more hands-on approach. Our most crucial program is the foster parent retention program which includes training, 24/7 support, and one on one mentorship for foster and adoptive families. The Foster Parent Peer Mentor Program is a 9 month program that pairs experienced foster parents with newly approved families. This program empowers and trains new foster parents on the intricacies of foster care and caring for our most vulnerable children in care. We also have a monetary fund that provides foster and adoptive parents with the financial means to meet unexpected family expenses. This fund can include purchasing a foster child a pair of cleats to play high school football, scholarships for summer camps, or Christmas gifts. FCAO also provides monthly parent-nights-out and self-care/date nights to ensure rest is being achieved to care for our most vulnerable children. At the surface, these needs may not sound urgent, but when you are managing the tall list of expectations to care for children in need, these meaningful gestures of support can be the difference between continuing to serve or asking DHS to close their home.
