Description
Thanks to the New York Power Authority funding the On the Canals program, we are offering free, two-hour excursions. Our excursions will provide standard or adaptive kayaks (see descriptions below) and accompanying equipment. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes or sandals that can get wet and bring your water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a small drawstring bag or backpack to carry them in. Excursions start and end at the Welcome Center (11 Water St.) in Brockport where there is municipal parking and accessible bathrooms. Kayaks will be launched at the adaptive dock and will travel west through the Village and then turn around and return to the adaptive dock. The distance traveled will depend on your ability and time. The excursion in the morning will be at a more leisurely pace and is good for beginners. The excursion in the afternoon will be at a steadier pace and will probably go further along the canal before turning around to go back to the beginning. Excursions are open to participants age 12 and up. If under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult. ADAPTIVE equipment is designed for those who need those adaptations in order to participate alongside family and friends. If you are unsure of what you might need, please contact us. Pictures and descriptions of the adaptive equipment are shown below. If you need STANDARD equipment and all of those have been reserved, please choose another date where there is availability. There will be two excursions each day at 9:30-11:30 am and 1:30-3:30 pm on the following dates: August 6, 7, 20, 21, 27, 28 and September 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, and 25, 2022. Please continue to check dates because plans change and tickets may become available at a later date. In partnership with Rochester Accessible Adventures, anyone in need of an adaptive kayak can sign up and will be provided an adaptive kayak, accompanying equipment, onsite training and a canal buddy. Pick your ticket for the type of equipment you need. Check out their website: https://rochesteraccessibleadventures.org/ Adaptive kayaks to be used are from Erie Canal Boat Company, Fairport, New York. They offer adaptive kayaks and cycles. Check out their website at: eriecanalboatcompany.com There will be three types of adaptive kayaks available (see the tickets) with the following adaptive equipment: Paddle Pivot: The combination of our Universal Base with this pivoted paddle adaption allows one-arm control of the kayak., It also provides support to completely remove the weight of the paddle from the paddler's arms when using both arms. Universal Paddling Seat: was designed with one purpose in mind: to open the sport of paddling to everyone. Regardless of the level of support needed, the seat provides as much or as little as the paddler needs. Each support point of the seat is able to be independently tilted, adjusted or removed to create a custom fit. All supports are cushioned with closed-cell foam and covered in breathable mesh fabric for maximum skin protection. from Creating Ability Outriggers: The outriggers can be adjusted to two positions; either tight to the hull for maximum efficiency, or out from the hull for maximum stability.
