Description

This workshop is to inform school nurses and school based professionals how to assess and manage children with diabetes. After course completion, attendees will be able to: 1. Explain basic T1DM pathophysiology, carb counting, treatment options and goals. 2. Report increased confidence in the utilization and troubleshooting of continuous glucose monitors, smart insulin pends and insulin pumps in the school setting. 3. Understand the format of and be able to implement the diabetes medical management plan for students with diabetes. 4. Implement proper treatment of hypo and hyperglycemia in the child or teen with T1DM in the school setting, during field trips or sports events. 5. Describe signs and symptoms of illness and follow sick day guidelines for the children/teens with T1DM. 6. Be able to describe the legal protections afforded to children with diabetes in the school setting. 7. Recognize developmental task appropriateness for children and teens with T1DM. In order to obtain nursing contact hours, criteria for successful completion includes attending at least 75% of the conference and completing a post course evaluation. There are no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies for those involved with the ability to control the content of this activity. Attendees meeting the criteria for successful completion for the Montana School Nurse Diabetes Education Day will receive 5.5 nursing contact hours.
