Description

Forensic science is popularly displayed in crime shows where it's the forensic scientist's duty to uncover more information from evidence taken from crime scenes. Forensic science includes a variety of disciplines, including fingerprint and DNA analysis to anthropology and wildlife forensics. In this cafe, teens will hear from real-life forensics professionals who work at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). If you are a teen interested in lab work or criminal justice, then this would be a good session for you to check out and learn more about a career as a forensic scientist! Speaker Bios Brittany Gresham is from Augusta, GA. She attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She has been a scientist in the Toxicology section at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for 11 years where she has served on a Society of Forensic Toxicologists’ conference planning committee, presented at a conference, and participated in instrument and drug validations. She enjoys being able to use her interest in science to provide an important service to the state. Whitney Melugin graduated from the University of North Georgia in May 2016 with a bachelor’s of science in Chemistry and a minor in Criminal Justice with emphasis in forensic sciences. She has been employed with the crime lab in the drug identification section since September 1, 2017. In her five years as a Forensic Chemist, she has analyzed a variety of cases to include solid material, liquids, pharmaceutical tablets, illicit tablets and much more. She has testified in court as an expert witness 5 times across the state. She has participated in 6 community outreach opportunities as well.
