ROYAL OAK, MI — The Royal Oak school district announced Thursday it has hired Jason Henshaw as an Assistant Principal at Royal Oak Middle School. "I feel so lucky to be joining Royal Oak Schools, it is very exciting to be part of Royal Oak's community of excellence," Henshaw said. "Royal Oak has always had a special place in my heart. It is the city where I got married (Royal Oak Farmers Market), my children were born in Beaumont, and I have friends and family in the community. To now have a chance to serve the community is truly an honor." Henshaw comes to the district from Warren Woods-Tower High School, where he taught social studies as a leadership teacher. "I am proud of the things I have accomplished in my 8 years at Warren Woods-Tower," Henshaw said. "Throughout my career, I have worn many hats and held many leadership roles including coaching varsity boy's basketball, serving as the student council advisor, and peer-to-peer coordinator." As assistant principal at Royal Oak Middle School, Henshaw said that he plans to bring a fresh perspective and energy to the school emphasizing on building relationships, ensuring equity and connecting with students, staff and the community. Henshaw also said he plans to spend a great deal of time with students, staff and families to ensure that teaching and learning is happening in every classroom. He joins Assistant Principal Dan Colligan, and newly hired Principal, Kristin Meldrum. "The administrative team is extremely excited to welcome Jason to Royal Oak Middle School," Meldrum said. "His dedication to his students and collaborative work ethic will make a wonderful addition to our staff and to our community. We can't wait for him to join us and jump right into the exciting things already happening at Royal Oak Middle School!" Even though Henshaw grew up in Warren and graduated from Warren Woods-Tower High School where he played, basketball and golf, he said that Royal Oak has always been a special place for him. Moreover, Henshaw said he took the job because he believes teachers within the Royal Oak School District truly care for their students and are willing to work hard to do what is best for the kids. "I am most looking forward to serving students, supporting an amazing staff, and building relationships with families and the community," Henshaw said.
