Could you imagine if the German education system tried to sweep the events of the 1930s and 40s under the rug? Could you imagine if there were bunches of ignorant German parents and lawmakers who didn't want education to include the history of Hitler and the Third Reich, because they didn't want German kids to feel bad about their heritage? Fortunately, by and large, Germans aren't that stupid. When I was a kid, white boy that I am, I learned the brutal truth about the shameful history of American slavery and American genocide. It did not make me feel bad about being white. Rather, it made me smarter to know the truth. It made me more enlightened about the tragic history of my black and indigenous classmates and neighbors. Truth has never been the enemy. But, lies and ignorance are.
