Description

This event will focus on incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into therapeutic practice. We will examine how our mind can distract both clients and practitioners from engaging in the present moment and a life that is meaningful and fulfilling. Throughout this training we will focus on incorporating specific skills such as cognitive defusion and “making space” to assist clients in being able to notice and accept unhelpful thoughts and feelings without engaging in maladaptive behaviors that increase suffering. We will also review how to add personal values into the treatment process and assist clients in taking part in committed actions that are aligned with personal meaning and fulfillment. The presentation will be interactive and include experiential activities that can be utilized in both individual and group treatment. OBJECTIVES: Following this presentation participants will be able to explain the differences between first, second, and third wave of cognitive behavioral therapies.Following this presentation participants will be able to define the six core processes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and explain how they can apply to both clients and practitioners.Following this presentation participants will be able to demonstrate two forms of cognitive defusion.Following this presentation participants will be able to explain the differences between values and goals in the context of ACT and be able to conduct a focused values assessment.SPEAKER BIO: Lee Neagle, MA, LPC, has nearly two decades of experience with mental health treatment on a national scale, heading up and creating programs at treatment facilities across the country, with his most recent role being Executive Director of the Aloria Health Institute for Education and Research.
