Vocalist Nicolas Bearde is one of today’s premier male jazz recording artists. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, he now makes his home in the San Francisco Bay Area. A natural singer with a keen ear since the age of five, his professional career began as a teenager, while stationed in Japan during his military service. After years of performing with various R&B groups, Nicolas began singing jazz in the eighties, leading to performances, touring, and recording with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Janis Siegal, Bernard Purdie, Vincent Herring, Eric Alexander, and Nat Adderley Jr. among others and appearing on many of their albums. His 1998 debut solo album, “Crossing the Line” was released in the US and the UK and garnered rave reviews on both sides of the pond. His five subsequent album releases remain jazz radio favorites domestically and abroad and have consistently placed high on the jazz charts. Jazz critics say, “Bearde is an exceptional balladeer… with an acute harmonic sense, seamless tone, and delivery.” A songwriter, educator, voiceover talent, and actor, Nicolas studied under the renowned acting teacher Jean Shelton. He has appeared in numerous stage plays and several feature films, including Final Analysis with Richard Gere and True Crime with Clint Eastwood, as well as popular TV shows – Nash Bridges and Monk, but ultimately, his guiding passion has remained his love of music. Throughout his career, Nicolas Bearde has won numerous awards for his vocal work. His 2016 album, “Invitation”, produced by Grammy Award-winning pianist, Nat Adderley Jr. and featuring saxophonist Vincent Herring, became a Grammy contender in 5 categories. “I Remember You – The Music of Nat King Cole”, his most recent album, produced by Josh Nelson and featuring Eric Alexander, along with the previously mentioned “Invitation”, remained in the Top 20 on Jazz Charts for several weeks. Bearde has a rich and silky baritone which has earned him a place as the featured vocalist with numerous Big Bands, including lead vocal and narrator for Vincent Herring’s Story of Jazz Orchestra and guest artist performances on numerous album projects, including that of renowned drummer Bernard Purdie, Vincent Herring’s “Hard Times” and songwriter, Jose Mari Chan’s “The Manhattan Connection”, produced by Janis Segal. With worldwide acclaim, from Jazziz, All About Jazz, Jazz Times, London Journal, Jazz Weekly and more, Nicolas Bearde has performed on 4 continents and has been a highly sought-out solo artist and front-man at International Jazz festivals including Monterey Jazz, North Sea, Montreaux, Stuttgart and Burghausen, San Jose Jazz and the Vancouver Folk Festival as well at sold-out venues like SFJazz Center, Yoshi’s Jazz Club, Blue Note Napa, Smoke and Birdland in NY, Pizza Express and Jazz Café in London, Arts Garage in Florida, Hermann’s in Victoria, Canada and Middle C Jazz in Charlotte, NC. Nicolas Bearde’s music has been described as the epitome of a jazz romantic, and his repertoire features a wide selection of creative arrangements, blues, and original compositions. All About Jazz says, says: “When Nicolas Bearde’s soulful and affecting baritone sits atop impeccably tailored arrangements of sterling standards, the results are absolutely stunning! Saxophonist Vincent Herring's intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. On stage, Herring and his band often make an incendiary sound over the fine and controlled rhythms of modern times. Vincent started playing saxophone at the age of 11 in school bands and studying privately at Dean Frederick’s School of Music in Vallejo, CA. At the age of 16, Herring was studying at California State University at Chico on a music scholarship. A year later he had won a berth in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. Vincent moved to New York City in the early 1980s attending Long Island University. He first toured in the United States and Europe as part of the Lionel Hampton Big Band. With his sound strongly influenced by Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Vincent’s virtuosity and promise came to the attention of Nat Adderley. The two forged a nine-year musical relationship, producing nine albums and touring around the world year after year. After Nat’s death, Louis Hayes collaborated with Vincent to form the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band. Vincent worked and recorded with Cedar Walton for more than 20 years. He has also appeared on stage and on recordings with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey, and The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition, Larry Coryell, Steve Turre, The Mingus Big Band (Won a Grammy in 2010), Kenny Barron, Nancy Wilson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Carla Bley, Mike LeDonne, Carl Allen, Ron McClure, and John Hicks among others. His extensive guest soloist appearances include performances with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center and Jon Faddis and The Carnegie Hall Big Band. Vincent's discography reveals over 20 titles as a leader and over 250 as a sideman. His current and past projects speak to the wide range of his musical interest and versatility: The Vincent Herring-Joris Dudli’s Soul Jazz Alliance, Earth Jazz Agents, Friendly Fire with Vincent Herring, and Eric Alexander. Vincent leads a band called Jazz The Story with Jon Faddis, Jeremy Pelt, Steve Turre, James Carter, Eric Alexander, Mike LeDonne, Kenny Davis, Carl Allen, and Nicolas Bearde. Vincent tours frequently with his projects around the United States, Europe, Japan, China, and around the world. Vincent continues to share his distinct voice and musical knowledge, as a performer and jazz educator.
