Eating disorders are occurring more frequently in children and adolescents than ever before. This presentation focuses on the complicated and vast list of symptoms, causes, and overall identification of criteria for diagnosis and proper treatment. Participants will learn how play therapy interventions can be useful, in addition to many evidence-based practices eating disorder specialists use to treat children, adolescents and families recover. Participants will explore the emotional, behavioral, and psychological implications of navigating eating disorders and how to best support these individuals in the playroom. Learning Objectives: By the end of this course participants are able to: 1. Participants will learn various types of eating disorders, criteria for diagnoses in children and adolescents in addition to co-occurring disorders and play therapy interventions that can be used when working with individuals. 2. Participants will acquire knowledge of how to assess for an eating disorder, in addition to the various treatment methods for children and adolescents, including play therapy. 3. Participants will obtain resources for eating disorder treatment, referral sources and the specialized certification process to treat eating disorders. 4. Participants will discuss three play therapy resources to assist families in helping their youths with disordered eating patterns. Play Therapy Special Topics 2 APT Contact CE. APT Approved Provider 01-109 About our presenters: Trish McCoy Kessler, MA, LPC, CEDS-S and Michelle D. Smith, MEd, LPC, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisorâ„¢, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, NCC, ACS, CCTP Trish completed her Master of Arts Degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University and is a former professional musician after earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Lynchburg College with a concentration in voice performance. She has sought out specialized training in the field of eating disorders from Sheppard Pratt Health System, River Mend Health Institute, Veritas Collaborative, and Laureate Eating Disorders Program/St Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma; in addition to providing group and individual therapy with Prosperity Eating Disorders and Wellness. She is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) through iaedp, International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals with certification as an Approved Supervisor to Licensed Clinicians seeking CEDS certification. Trish has specific training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Adolescents Coping with Loss, Acute Stress, Grief, and Trauma, EMDR, and is certified in Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA) to treat substance abuse in adolescents. Recently, Trish became certified to teach Restorative Yoga under the direction of Cyndi Lee, founder of the Om Yoga Center and practices in her sessions and in private sessions. Currently, Trish in the process of completing certification as a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS), another population she has a passion in treating. Michelle has been providing services in the Lynchburg area as a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2015. She is a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor and the Virginia Association for Play Therapy (VAPT) Treasurer. Michelle specializes in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant. Her focus is working with those who have experienced complex trauma throughout their lifetime. Michelle encourages clients to allow the painful past to be unearthed in order to expose truth and wholeness. She believes many people come to counseling with issues related to interpersonal conflict, anxiety, and depression to learn they have been struggling with trauma much, if not all, of their lives. She is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS).
