In support of the vision that drives Greener Way Associates, the United Nations and all of us to put biodiversity first, Watts will discuss how the novel Tree is inspired by, the role of ecological history which considers how different human cultural values force ecosystem transition over timecurrent science on plant-plant communication how native plant populations sustain biodiversityhow locally sourced native plants conserve water and can help recharge groundwaterhow she was inspired to write a book with a tree as the primary characterthe way out of the anthropocene and into the bioceneWatts will read three short pieces from the novel Tree. Watts observes that her favorite part of every book event is always the question and answer section because audience members' own ideas and stories allow everyone to share their own love of trees and their understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings. Melina Sempill Watts' writing has appeared in the New York Times motherlode blog, Sierra Magazine, Earth Island Journal and many local venues. Watts is a watershed coordinator for Los Angeles County in the North Santa Monica Bay Watershed. Watts has been working in conservation for two decades for such clients as New Consensus (a non-profit focused on building the Green New Deal with Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) California Association of Resource Conservation Districts, Heal the Bay, the Bay Foundation, Glenn County Resource Conservation District, Fall River Conservation District and the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains. Tree is the first novel written from the perspective of plants. Winner of Best New Fiction in the 8th Annual Beverly Hills Book Awards, Tree has inspired a cycle of paintings by California plein air painter Jeff Sojka which are featured at GO WILD: Watts and Sojka at the Museum of Ventura County. The opening night reception is Saturday, August 27 from 3:00 - 5:00. The show runs from August 26 to October 2, 2022.
