This training will feature a presentation by Hudda Ibrahim titled Somali Refugee Perceptions of Mental Health and Illness, followed by a panel of local new American leaders addressing questions about their cultural communities, and a Q&A with the speakers. A light supper will served at 6pm with the speaker starting at 6:30pm. Attendees will be able to: Better understand cultural and religious beliefs impacting perceptions of mental health and mental illnessEnhance their cultural competency with Somali and other minority culturesBuild relationships with refugees to discuss mental health more effectivelyProvide support and intervention to their students with emotional and behavioral needsEliminate stigmasEnlighten traditional healing practices that are contrary to Western medicineHelp new immigrant community members to access coping mechanismsThe event will be approximately 2 hours and registration is required. About the Speaker: Hudda Ibrahim – Founder and President of Filsan Talent Partners Hudda has extensive expertise in training, teaching, and curriculum development. She has delivered workshops and customized training to company executives, HR departments/staff leadership teams, and supervisors. Hudda graduated from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, majoring in Conflict Resolution and English Literature. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. She is the author of From Somalia to Snow, What Color is My Hijab? and Lula Wants to Wear a Badge. As a faculty member at the St. Cloud Technical and Community College, and trainer, Hudda specializes in topics of diversity and inclusion, cultural competency, and unconscious bias. Hudda is a certified trainer through Franklin Covey and Cornel University. Currently, Hudda is pursuing a Doctor of Education and Leadership degree at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Hudda is a recipient of the prestigious Bush Foundation Fellowship (2019) and an Initiators Fellowship from the Greater Minnesota Initiative Foundation (2017).
