Our bees have been busy this summer! They have spent the past months pollinating the many neighborhood gardens and collecting nectar to make and fill their comb with honey. Fun Fact: Did you know honeybees must gather from 2 million flowers to make just one pound of honey?
Recently, we have removed the extra honeycomb to extract the honey – leaving them plenty of food for the winter and giving them some more time to make more before the cold hits. We then return the empty comb BACK into the hives in the spring, as it takes about 9 pounds of honey to make just 1 pound of comb, to help them get started again.
If you are interested in witnessing and learning more about this process of extracting honey, stop by this Thursday between 11 and 1 pm to watch as we process and extract the honey before enjoying it in a variety of different ways (stay tuned for our upcoming Mead Class!).
We will be set up in Convivium's Learning Center – located at the back of the building behind our kitchen. Take the hallway where the bathrooms are and continue all the way until the end, it will be the open door on your left. Stop by on your lunch break!
This is one of Convivium's core demonstrations and is FREE and open to everyone.
Our demonstrations are free and fun ways to witness a variety of our behind-the-scenes projects that educate and inspire you to connect more with your food, nature, and your community.
This event is free! No registration required – just show up!
