WTH OC Streetcar? The Impacts of Mass Public Transit

The OC Streetcar is the first modern streetcar project to be built in Orange County and will serve the Cities of Santa Ana and Garden Grove. Beginning operation in 2024, it will run along a 4.15-mile route that connects the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center (SARTC) and a new transit hub at Harbor Boulevard and Westminster Avenue in Garden Grove. The return of local mass transit has received a mixed response; most residents and community groups opposed the project early on, and local businesses losing revenue due to the ongoing construction. In this community presentation and conversation, we’ll aim to share background on the project, research that has shown to tie streetcar projects to gentrification, and what potential impacts may come to areas around the OC Streetcar route.
