Job Title: Field Technician Status: Part-time (20hrs or less per week) Supervisor: Neighborhood Trees Program Manager Salary: $20-24 / hourly depending on experience Hours: Monday-Friday 8am-4pm; Start and end times may vary with maximum of 20 hours per week Occasional Saturday planting day assistance (7am–3 pm) Benefits: Not eligible for benefits Come and join Friends of Trees as a Field Technician! As a Field Tech, you'll perform on the ground support and site preparation tasks in advance of tree planting events during the planting season (October-April), and through tree maintenance during the off season (May-September). This support will be primarily done through prepping for planting events via digging holes on public and private properties, yard sign and other supplies delivery, tree moving, planting, and mulching and other field-support related tasks as assigned. The Field Technician will operate a company vehicle and independently prepare sites for tree planting throughout the City of Portland, City of Vancouver, and City of Oregon City. This employee will represent Friends of Trees, interact with property owners at the door on a frequent basis, and will communicate often with Friends of Trees project managers to relay information from the field. Strong candidates will have flexible schedules, daytime availability during the week, with flexibility for event support (Saturdays) as needed. Strong communications skills (think status updates, troubleshooting with coworkers, working with customers, etc) are crucial to this role. Desired qualifications: ● The ability to work independently and/or with limited supervision ● A valid driver’s license with a good driving record ● Ability to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly ● Ability to do physical labor outside in winter weather conditions. ● Ability to maintain accurate field data ● Excellent scheduling and communication skills ● Well organized with excellent time management skills ● Positive, flexible attitude and a good sense of humor ● Strong map reading and navigation skills ● Experience with customer service ● Knowledge of trees, gardening, or landscaping ● Commitment to actively engage in FoT’s commitment to Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion centered work Planting & maintenance tasks: ● Dig holes in advance of volunteer tree planting events ● Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hand pruners, pick axe,etc. ● Mulch and maintain trees. ● Install trunk guards on newly planted trees ● Operate a company vehicle to navigate to multiple project sites daily ● Operate watering vehicle and hydrants during maintenance season (May-Sept) General staff duties: ● Maintain tools and equipment. ● Submit an accurate record of time to supervisors. ● Help keep tools, tool rooms, and work vehicles clean and in good condition. ● And other duties as assigned.
