The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands and the Office of the Orange County Historian will once again be sponsoring a fun afternoon of croquet in Downing Park on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1-5 pm (registration on the day of the event opens at 12:30). The event will recreate a time in Newburgh’s past when lawn games like croquet were part of the sporting and recreational life in Newburgh, and beautiful Downing Park makes a wonderful setting for these games. The event is open to all ages as there will be several courses set up for children and adults. Music will be provided, and participants may dress—if they wish—in traditional white croquet outfits or other colorful costumes representing clothing from the past. Croquet equipment and rules will be provided by the Historical Society, and instructors will be on hand to assist with those who have never played the game or need a refresher course. The Historical Society successfully hosted this event for several summers a few years ago, and they think the time is right to come together again as a community for this unique activity that will be fun for all ages. $10 for one person$15 for two people$20 for a family of five Register by September 7th; there will be an additional $5 fee for late entrants. No refunds/all sales are final. So save the date—Sept. 17 (rain date: Sept 18)—bring a blanket or a chair, and come out and join the fun!
