Description

Learn the sport of curling at one of our Learn to Curl classes! These sessions are a great way to get ready for our upcoming leagues. In this 2 1/2-hour session, you will receive formal instruction about the sport, including stone delivery, sweeping, and basic strategy. You will also have the opportunity to play part of a game alongside your classmates. Cool, huh? FAQs Do I need to know how to skate? No! If you can walk, you can curl! We also welcome wheelchair participants. There are many different ways to play. For individuals with knee/joint difficulty, we have delivery sticks available, so they can deliver a stone while standing, without having to slide. Do I need to be a member of the club to participate in Learn to Curl? No! Quite the opposite! Learn to Curl is great for for people who either have NOT curled before, or haven't curled in a long time and need a refresher. At Learn to Curl, you try the sport, and see if you like it. We teach you everything you need to know to begin playing the game in leagues with us as a member! Do I need a team? Can I come alone? Curling is a social sport. If you come with others, it's a great time with friends and family. If you come alone, it's a wonderful way to meet new people (who also happened to find us and decide that curling would be a fun thing to try!). Your choice! Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? There's no minimum age, but age 12 and up is generally best. You must be able to get enough "push" to slide a 42-pound granite stone on ice. Some of our curlers have been younger. We've had league players as young as 11, and we've had event participants slightly younger than that. Can people come watch? YES! Spectators are welcome. Note that all who enter the facility during LICC events, regardless of whether they're on the ice, must abide by COVID-19 rules for the club. What should I bring? You will be on the ice for 2 hours, so dress appropriately: All COVID-19 rules as listed farther below must be followed. For directions, safety, and attire information, please check our What to Expect page (https://licurling.org/customPage.php/what-to-expect)In short, you want to be warm, mobile, and safe. That includes appropriate rubber-soled shoes, layers to adjust to temperature, and any safety gear you may choose to bring. Some curlers choose to wear helmets, for example. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is free parking on-site. Long Island Rail Road service is also nearby, though you will need to take a cab or make other arrangements. If you have transportation concerns, let us know and we'll do our best to provide suggestions. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Leave a voicemail at 516-900-CURL (2875), or email [email protected]. Email gets a faster response, the phone number is mostly voicemail-only! We are an all-volunteer organization. COVID-19 UPDATESAs conditions improve during the COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to update and evaluate our guidance, while also aligning with guidance from the Long Island Sports Hub facility and other relevant authorities. As of August 2022, we have the following. This may change as the event gets closer: All who enter the facility for LICC events must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of age. This is currently (August 2022) defined as two weeks after a second Pfizer or Moderna dose, or two weeks after a single J&J dose. At this time, boosters are not required.Masks are strongly recommended, but not required.Depending on club, facility, county, or state rules, we may make further changes as needed, including updated mask and vaccination guidelines.
