Question On How to Get Gigs

Hello. I'm just wondering about the process of getting gigs at small venues, be it coffee shops, pubs, other restaurants...I've been playing for many years but never felt like I was ready to do that until now. Do you call them up and tell them you exist and have availability? What's the general way to get a show venue? Thanks!
