Description

Come join Black Surf Santa Cruz and Outrigger Santa Cruz for a Recreational Paddle in a beautiful outrigger canoe along our Monterey Bay! An outrigger canoe is a type of canoe featuring one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers which are fastened to one or both sides of the main hull. It takes six people pulling together to move a canoe. Join us as we paddle in the safety of the Santa Cruz Small Boat Harbor when appropriate, and — weather, conditions, and crew abilities permitting — in the Monterey Bay, where ocean conditions are varied, challenging, and beautiful. Come meet other Black Surf Santa Cruz members and join us for a fun and social way to get fit on the Monterey Bay. 4:00-5:00 - Check-In and Intro to Outrigger Canoeing 5:00-6:00 - Canoeing in Harbor or in the Monterey Bay (weather and tide permitting) 6:00-7:00 - Optional social hour to include light apps and beverages About BSSC: Black Surf Santa Cruz (BSSC) is a 501(c3) organization promoting mental, physical, spiritual, and communal healing through surfing, education, recreation, advocacy, and wellness. This event is a part of our Field Trip Program where BSSC members have an opportunity to experience an entry level course into a fun recreational activity outside of surfing. About OSC: Outrigger Santa Cruz (OSC) is a 501(3c) non-profit organization whose mission is to develop, implement and promote outrigger canoe paddling for all people without regard to age, gender, creed, ethnicity, or physical ability or disability. You may have seen their canoes at the Santa Cruz Harbor near the Crow’s Nest or perhaps racing across the bay to Monterey in one of our many long distance races or at the Polynesian festival at the Santa Cruz Wharf. They aim to promote cross cultural respect, environmental awareness and clean water activities as well as raising money for and donating time to various charities. Parking instructions: Free street parking on Lake Ave. (subject to availability) & pay parking in Marina area parking lots. What to wear: Loose fitting water gear (rash guard, swim trunks or leggings, polypro shirt, etc.), water shoes or flip flops (or tennis shoes you don’t mind getting wet), hat (one that will stay in place and can get wet), light outer layer in case of wind, sunglasses, sunscreen. Bring a change of clothes for after, water to drink, etc. Additional Information: Waivers will need to be signed. If a guest is under 18, a parent/guardian will need to be the signee. We will have the waivers onsite. OSC provides paddles and lifejackets. If the guest is under the age of 13, a lifejacket is required to be worn. Although all these guests are 'water' folks, the steersperson will still review and have guests demonstrate putting on a lifejacket during their pre launch meet & greet on land. The club does not require guests to wear life jackets on the water. It has worked well in the past to let guests know of this and if they prefer, they can bring their own PFD or lifejacket.
