The moon has been an object of general worship and great symbolism in Chinese culture for thousands of years. By the 7th century, the reverence had merged with traditional harvest celebrations to formalize the Mid-Autumn or Moon Festival, therefore, it is a harvest festival that is all about giving thanks, for nature’s abundance and for joyful reunions with loved ones.
On September 10th, the day of the festival in 2022, American Chinese Museum in Philadelphia will mark this Harvest Moon in the traditional Chinese manner: with a Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as a Moon Festival, and it’ll be yours to enjoy—the onstage performances, including Chinese traditional dancing, singing, Chinese music playing, the hands-on crafts of how to make Chinese Lanterns, the Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting workshop, and of course the festival’s traditional pastry, mooncakes—we will have workshop to teach you how to make mooncakes, and everyone who comes to the event will have a free mooncake and seasonal fruits to enjoy!
