Description
The Wheaton Revitalization project represents a great achievement for Montgomery County - with nearly 40 months of construction and a budget of $179 million, it’s one of the largest projects ever undertaken by the County in a public-private partnership. The new 308,000 14-story office building is now home to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and six County agencies, including the Department of Permitting Services, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Recreation, the Office of Community Use of Public Facilities and the Mid-County Regional Services Office. The project broke ground in June 2017 and completed construction in September 2020. The building achieved LEEDv2009 Commercial Interiors (CI) Gold certification and LEEDv2009 Core & Shell (CS) Platinum certification in 2021. In addition to the office building, the project includes ground-floor retail, plaza spaces, a new Town Square for hosting public events and a four-level below-grade public parking structure. The project, combined with 1.1 million square feet of new private development, represents a new Georgia Avenue gateway to Silver Spring and an important milestone in the County’s commitment to sustainability.
