A common experience among Asian Americans growing up is feeling ashamed of our authentic cultural dishes. Many of us didn't want to stand out in the school cafeteria or feel outcast because of our unfamiliar dishes of varying textures and smells. Well, I'm sharing with you the REAL lunches I should've taken to school:
5 dishes | $50 | Pre-orders only | Pick-up Aug. 27th, 12:30-3:30pm | Okasan Vintage (6001 Burnet Rd.)
Menu
Fried omelette with preserved radish and scallions over riceRice porridge with cubed pig blood and garnishesStir fried canned sardines with toasted baguette Chinese sausage, fried egg, pork floss over rice Mama noodles with beef and broccoliI remember waiting for the bus with my little sister, holding a purple She-Ra lunchbox. My sister had a bubblegum pink one, My Little Pony. Inside both were a ham and cheese Lunchable, chocolate Jello pudding cup and a small bag of Fritos. I insisted on these things in my lunch box because I wanted to belong. I didn’t want the other kids to laugh or twist their faces at my REAL lunches. I didn’t want pointing fingers, pinched noses and hearing, “Ew”, “stinky” and “weird”.
But when I got home from school? Best believe I dove headfirst into MY food. The food I had craved all day long. That familiar food, prepared by an immigrant mom working multiple jobs, who was an absolute beast at making something, anything, everything out of nothing.
I want to send you all back to school this year with a bit of what I should’ve been packing proudly in my She-Ra lunchbox. It’s a Mama Kong Back-to-School Lunch Kit.
