Although the stats vary, it’s said around 2,000 dogs are euthanized EVERYDAY at shelters. Cats are even more. This picture is what it looks like at the end of the day at a local shelter. 😔 Approximately 50% of dogs don’t make it out once they enter! The top 5 states that are responsible for 50% of shelter euthanasia are Texas, Florida, California, North Carolina and Georgia (some sites say Louisiana). Pit Bulls are the #1 euthanized breed, followed by Chihuahuas. And these are stats from last year, I can’t imagine them for this year.
Education and shifts in laws are key for making a difference. Rescues and shelters are a tiny bandage on a HUGE problem. Things HAVE to change. Awareness is step 1. Education is step 2. Changes are step 3. My goal is not to be a big downer today (although I know I am) but to shine a light on a HUGE problem in South Carolina and several other states. Yes, some states don’t have this problem because their laws on spay/neuter, breeders and animal rights are much better! How can you help?
1. SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PET
2. DONT BUY FROM BACKYARD BREEDERS (and please do not support Pit Bull breeders or Chi breeders RIGHT NOW. There are so so many of these dogs that are unwanted)!
3. SPEAK UP!
4. Foster and adopt if you can!
Together we CAN make a difference!
