I am looking for a singer who has the ability, the desire to sing soul, to get bluesy, get gospel, sing rock and roll… Merry Clayton, Aretha, Marvin Gaye, Chaka Khan, Beyoncé, Ronnie Specter, Otis Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Millie Jackson, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Donna Summer, Patti LaBelle, Mahalia Jackson, Betty Davis, Sly Stone… Stevie Wonder Donny Hathaway, Isley Brothers, Gap Band, Diana Ross Tammi Terrell Mavis Staples…Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Sharon Jones BLACK MUSIC. I’ve posted ads in the past and apparently my ad has drawn the attention of some confused white people. We need a singer who can sing black. If you are confused by what that means then you are likely to not be a good fit. Now with that out of the way, the music we are doing is not strictly soul. But we want a singer who at least “gets” soul. Rock and Roll was born of white people overtly attempting to sound black. The singer we want gets that. We do covers ( almost always SOUL music) We write songs…soul hybrid?? Psychedelic neo soul? Alternative soul?? I don’t know what to call it, but I know you need to have soul to sing it.
