We will take core samples of the sand in Avila beach. From these core samplings, we will count and classify mole (sand) crabs and discuss trophic relationships involved in a marine food web, characteristics of sandy beach habitat, mole crab anatomy, and the mole crab life cycle. Bring snacks and water to enjoy at the beach after the activity concludes. This field trip is a drop-off event designed for high school students. Our HSTs will be the chaperones. Parents must complete this waiver and email it to Jennifer Hubbard @[email protected]. Your student may not attend unless this waiver is completed. *Masks recommended when indoors due to the small size of the building. We encourage families to turn in a sample that is linked to the field trip that you attended during your next learning period. It helps to ensure that we can continue to provide these trips and their educational value. **To ensure the health and safety of all attendees, please do not attend a field trip if you, your student(s), or anyone in your household is ill or showing possible signs of illness.**Please read our refund policy! Refunds will not be given for any reason. As a courtesy, if you are sick or unable to attend a field trip, please contact the teacher that planned the event to let them know so they do not wait at the venue for you. You may not send a different family in your place as we will not have a waiver for them. May I pay using my student's planning amount? Yes! You can pay for your student's ticket with your student's planning amount. You will need to choose the free Heartland Student ticket option. Once registration closes the teacher planning this field trip will reach out with instructions on how to place an order in Procurify. Funds will be deducted when your order is approved. Your spot on this field trip will not be confirmed until you have placed your order in Procurify when instructed to do so. Whenever possible we will list the option of paying out of pocket for field trips by using a credit card through Eventbrite. Any non-Heartland enrolled students will need to use this option when purchasing tickets. (Eventbrite charges a small fee in order to offer this service.) Does this trip have any height, weight, and/or age restrictions? High School Students ONLY! What are the check-in procedures? Meet in front of the museum to check in at 9:15 AM. Is there on-site parking available? There is limited beachfront parking near the museum, but that usually fills up first thing in the morning. Your next parking option is the parking lot. It sits in the center of town and is controlled by the Port San Luis Harbor District. It's currently the only place in Avila that charges for parking. Parking rates are $6.00 for all day. Free parking is also available along the long stretch of main road that runs through Avila. Just keep in mind that it’s a few minutes walk to the beach. So, if you have a lot of stuff, you might drop it off with one of your party members first. Can we pack snacks or lunch for this event or field trip? Water bottles are permitted. There are picnic tables nearby for students who would like to bring lunch or a snack to eat after the event. *Heartland does not provide transportation for any of our field trips. Our field trips are for Heartland Charter School students. How do I contact the organizer? Name: Jennifer Hubbard Email: [email protected] Phone: 805-242-2035
