Maps are spatially distorted and subjective and yet they are useful tools, making information accessible or summarizing complex data. The interpretation of a map depends on the map producer and the map consumer–a map can be sinister, reinforcing colonialism or marking patterns of war. Or the map can help us find a preferred route, identify the source of an outbreak, or alert us to upcoming topography. Referring to themselves as maps, the artists open access to their intuition and personal narratives, offering a path through symbols, iconography, representations, and metaphors. The exhibition’s title is a lyric from the group’s song “Artist Thinker”, which considers the artist’s personal experience versus the intention of their artwork, both of which are necessary to interpret the tone of their present time.
