Description
The General Maintenance Worker focuses on general building upkeep, fixing and maintaining mechanical equipment and machines. Daily tasks can include but are not limited to preventative maintenance and completing maintenance tickets from Spiceworks. The Spiceworks maintenance tickets include furniture moving, plumbing work, painting, flooring repair and upkeep, electrical repairs, and during COVID general cleaning/disinfecting of affected rooms. Duties and Responsibilities Relationship Building: Create a positive relationship with colleagues on the Facilities Team Develop a positive relationship with general staff Functional Duties: Answer all walkie calls for maintenance and custodial requests Paint areas in the building when needed Conduct routine inspections of premises and equipment throughout the building to ensure that the school is tidy and functional Perform preventative maintenance Complete regular maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs Assist in ground maintenance during bad weather, such as spreading salt, shoveling snow, etc. Install necessary equipment as needed Handle basic repairs and maintenance Oversee contractors (in partnership with Facilities Manager) when professional repairs are necessary Inspect and troubleshoot various equipment and systems Repairing machines, equipment, or structures as necessary Collaborate with Facilities Team during renovations or facilities improvements Work closely with Facilities Porter Meet weekly with Facilities Manager to check in on any issues, challenges, or support needed Follow the Faculties Department calendar (The responsibilities listed above are representative and not all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned by supervisor/s.) Knowledge Qualifications Proven maintenance experience including knowledge of carpentry, electrical repairs and plumbing repairs Skilled in the use of hand and power tools Ability to take apart machines, equipment, or devices to remove and replace defective parts Ability to check blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary Ability to use standard tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches Experience with precision measuring instruments or electronic testing devices Experience performing routine maintenance Ability to patch drywall holes in walls Experience in painting Possess creativity and problem-solving skills Professional attitude Strong organizational and follow up skills Ability to work independently Ability to maintain focus while working individually Strong time management skills Thoroughly and consistently adhere to organizational policies and procedures Personal and Interpersonal Skills Personal passion for and alignment with organizational mission, vision, and goals Action-Oriented – enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even when limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation Personal qualities include integrity, credibility, accountability, and commitment to the mission of Giant Steps Self-directed, with a high level of initiative and the ability to work independently Strong communication skills Flexible, can work in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, and demonstrates resourcefulness Willingness and flexibility to work nights or weekends, if needed A consensus builder and team player with a collegial working style A positive approach to embracing change Minimum Job Requirements Reliable Three years of proven maintenance experience or a similar position High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred Classification A non-exempt position is under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Salary Salary is commensurate with the level of education and experience Calendar The General Maintenance Worker follows the Facilities Calendar Days off or any change in schedule must be approved by the Facilities Manager Conditions of Employment Pre-employment physical, drug screening, and criminal background check Possesses appropriate professional credentials Reference check(s) Working Conditions and Physical Effort Work is typically performed indoors within the school facility Moderate physical movement is required for the job Minimal exposure to physical risk is anticipated Annual Performance Review The General Maintenance Worker will schedule his/her formal annual review meeting two weeks before his/her performance review in June. The General Maintenance Worker will complete a draft personal evaluation during the formal review two weeks before his/her performance review in June. The General Maintenance Worker review will be conducted in June of each year by the Facilities Manager.
