Description
Supporters of Sister Cities of Houston Sister Cities of Houston invites the public to join us for the One World Concert 2022 5:30 – 7:30 pm, Wednesday, August 31, in the Brown Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Admission is FREE. This year’s theme is Journeys. It is a common thread running through the Houston community. Some members' relatives journeyed here generations ago. Other members have just recently arrived. Regardless, Houston is a destination for many and a launching pad for communities to connect. It's the place from which mankind journeyed to the Moon. This year's One World Concert features music and dance from the Balkans, China, Germany and Venezuela. It’s sponsor, Javaid Anwar, will share his own amazing journey from Pakistan to America and his friendship with President George W. Bush and Mayor Sylvester Turner. The One World Award will recognize the extraordinary contributions of Harry and Antje Gee and their entire family to the cause of international understanding through service to community. Come enjoy a delightful evening of music and dance and help us honor the Gee family. The event is free but registration in advance is required. The performance is free but the MFAH's standard parking fees apply. Masking and vaccinations are encouraged for the safety of others. To register, go to our Sister Cities of Houston web site or connect via Eventbrite. I look forward to celebrating our many Journeys with you all. Susan Young, Sister Cities of Houston President WHAT ARE SISTER CITIES? The sister cities concept was launched in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed linking American cities with cities in other countries to exchange people, ideas and cultures. President Eisenhower’s goal was to involve individuals at all levels of U.S. society in citizen diplomacy in the hope that these people-to-people relations would lessen the chance of future world conflicts. Founded in 1956, Sister Cities International is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit which serves as the national membership organization for individual sister cities, counties, and states across the U.S. Sister Cities International serves as a hub for institutional knowledge and best practices in the field of citizen diplomacy. As a membership association, Sister Cities International continues to strengthen the sister cities network through strategic institutional partnerships, grants, programs, and support for its members. Sister City relationships are official relationships established through formal agreements by the respective municipal governments. Houston’s sister city program is a volunteer-based program that works with the City of Houston to further the sister city relationships. Volunteers develop and implement programs and activities that connect the cities on mutually beneficial matters. Parking: Self Park - We recommend guests parking at #5 (Nancy & Rich Kinder Building).
