The Drink & Draft Poetry Roadshow hosts writing workshop sessions.
I have been thinking of the end of summer. A subtle but distinct difference from “Summer”.
The “Summer” that is common in our American mindset/culture/media is full of fun, beaches, vacations (mental and physical). As though collectively, we as a society say “Take it easy, it’s summer” even though many of us can’t afford to and companies do their best to limit paid vacations for the decreasing number that have permanent jobs.
A season where the heat settles a languor over our minds yet also prompts us to want to do things outside. I say prompts but the reality is with the heat, many of us stay inside in air conditioning (those of us lucky enough to have it) longing to be outside where we can garden, bike, or con friends with boats into taking us out for an afternoon sail.
But the end of summer is a different season. It is that liminal space between summer and fall. When the weather is still hot but the sun sets earlier. There will come that one day in mid-August where the night air is crisp and cool and we will think “Yes, summer is ending” before the days go back to being hot and humid.
Now we fight against the heat, as our minds get ready to go back to school or life. There is excitement and busyness. Plans are made (whether they ever see fruition is another workshop).
So in this workshop we will explore the richness of this not-quite-its-own-season season.
