We want to help you learn and gain donkey knowledge and experience so you and your donkeys are off to a great start on your new adventure together. Share experiences with other donkey owners or soon to be owners and have some of the world's donkey experts at your disposal for the day. Who: While this class is oriented toward the newer donkey owner, we get great feedback from experienced owners as well! Location: Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, Eastern Regional Headquarters 414 Stonewall Rd., Concord VA 24538 Google GPS - use “PVDR East” in the address bar Date: Saturday, October 15th, 2022 Time and Agenda: 8:45 - 9:00 am Check-in (gate opens at 8:30) 9:00 - 12:00 pm - Interactive lectures with hands on experience Understanding the psychology and physiology of donkeys and how they are different from horses How to prepare before you get your donkey - shelter, play space, supplies, and more Safe handling for you and the donkey Donkey care and feed needs, understand body scores, and how to manage weight loss or gain 12:00 - 12:30 pm - Lunch (provided) with Guest Speaker Fun donkey facts and history Training and handling tips and tricks Fun activities and events to enjoy with your donkey 12:30 - 1:30 pm - Farrier presented lecture and Q&A Learn how to handle your donkey's feet safely and teach your donkey to stand for the farrier Common hoof issues and how to avoid and treat them Finding a great donkey farrier 1:30 - 2:15 pm - Vet presented lecture and Q&A How to tell when your donkey is sick and what to do about it How to take vitals (temp, pulse, respiration, hydration and gums) and what is normal Common health concerns (like colic), dental related issues, and so much more How to find the best donkey vet 2:15 - 3:00 pm - Final Remarks and survey Preparing for emergencies, including trailering tips and tricks Open Q&A Survey - help us make this the best class possible for the next group 3:00 - 4:00 pm - Optional Hee-Haw Hike Weather permitting, join us on a fast paced hike through the wooded trails with a long-eared friend by your side. Practice some of the safe handling techniques learned in the class as well as witness many of the behaviors discussed. Cost: $75 per person, includes a gourmet boxed lunch and beverages throughout the day. $50 of the registration fee can be applied toward the future adoption fee of a donkey (once approved).
