At the stroke of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 an armistice brought a cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany, effectively ending World War I—“the war to end all wars.” On November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first commemoration of “Armistice Day” to honor those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory. In 1954, “Armistice Day” became “Veterans Day” to honor American veterans of all wars. Among those who have given much of their life to service, Chip Beck is a former Navy Commander, combat soldier, intelligence agent—and even combat artist. With experience in more than 20 wars, revolutions, and civil conflicts on four continents, ranging from Vietnam to Iraq, Haiti and Zimbabwe, Beck reflects on his lifetime of service to America and support for freedom around the world.
