Description
“'Mira arte fabricatum': Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Doors and the Role of the Artist in Renaissance Florence" - Presented by Dr. Steven BuleIn a span of fifty years, Lorenzo Ghiberti created two sets of bronze doors for the baptistery in Florence, the most well-known of which are the Gates of Paradise. These works stand among the greatest artistic achievements of the Renaissance. Created in a period of growing naturalism in art and in an environment of humanistic thought, the doors provided inspiration and ideas for contemporary artists and established a legacy that endured for generations. This presentation will focus on Ghiberti’s genius as well as contributions by contemporary masters. Aspects of the Gates of Paradise will be highlighted, as will the new role of artists as major contributors to society and culture.
