Over the span of 15 years of teaching about cultural competency with American Indian children and families, Professor LaPlante attempted to create a course that sought to define the nebulous concept of cultural competency. In this presentation, Professor LaPlante will share lessons learned along the way, highlighting key takeaways about culturally competent knowledge and skills with American Indians, relevant for social work, mental health, and other professionals. Objectives: After participating in this program, participants will: Acquire knowledge on the history of the American Indian as a first stage in cultural competence,Acquire knowledge of American Indian historical trauma and considerations for trauma informed practice, and Gain awareness about models of practice interventions with American Indian populations. Agenda:9:30 – 10:00 am Check-in 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Culturally Informed Considerations for the Mental Health Care of American Indians 12:00 pm Participant evaluations and certificate handout About the Presenter:Kathy LaPlante is a member of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Oklahoma. She currently teaches in the Master of Social Work program at the University of South Dakota. She teaches primarily in the areas of child welfare, Indian child welfare, and trauma-informed social work practice with children and families. In recent years, she served as lead faculty on a National Child Welfare Workforce training grant to help prepare undergraduate social work students for child welfare work. Supplemental to this was a Tribal Child Welfare grant where she collaborated with Oglala Lakota College in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, to address cultural competency training for child welfare practice. Prior to teaching, Kathy practiced social work in Los Angeles County where she advocated for the rights of American Indian children and families. Kathy is married and has one daughter. Continuing Education: This training is designed to meet 2 hours of continuing education requirements for various disciplines (Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work) pending board approval. Continuing Education certificates will be provided to document attendance and participation. This provider is pending approval from the SD Board of Social Work Examiners for provision of continuing education hours.
