The Latino Political Network came together out of a desire to educate and empower Latino aspiring elected officials across Iowa, starting when Rob Barron became the first Latino to win election to the Des Moines School Board in 2013.
The official kick off drew more than thirty Latino/as from ten communities. Since its start, LPN has been dedicated to teaching Latinos how to build a campaign.
The Latino Political Network has strived to offer training and mentorship. The goal: to shave the top off the learning curve for Latino/a candidates. While Latino/as make up about 6% of the population in Iowa; the LPN estimates that Latino/as hold fewer than 30 of the more than 7000 state and local elected positions in the state. The LPN has maintained a commitment to move its events around Iowa and offer its programming free of charge to make it easy for Latino/as to take part.
Our annual event, Latino Voices Together, is a social gathering event for Latino/as all over the state as our signature fundraiser of the year. Over the years, it has feature speakers such as Nebraska State Senator Tony Vargas, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and Congressman Joaquin Castro, among others.
