By James A. Williams “A Walk in August” is a journey of self-reflection and friendship between Broadway Actor, Director, and Educator James A. Williams and Pulitzer Prize winning American playwright August Wilson. Williams explores his life experiences mirrored with the many roles he has portrayed in Wilson’s plays. Wilson is best known for his series of ten plays, collectively called the “Pittsburgh Cycle,” which chronicles the experiences and heritage of the African American community in the 20th century. Wilson is considered by many as “theater’s poet of Black America.” Curriculum Connections: Theater Arts, Communication, Aesthetics, Contextual Relevancy, Culture, Language Arts Durham Arts Council CAPS Program Option “Whose Story Is It?” Workshop by Donna Washington In this interactive story creation workshop, students will use oral narrative rules to create personal stories in small groups. The workshop focuses on how presentation, structure, and details are used to convey a compelling story. Once students write their stories, they are presented to the group where we use context clues to guess whose story was told. Donna Washington’s demonstrations of excellent storytelling technique and creation amplifies student voices and supports English Language curriculum for grades 6-12.
