Description

In January 2020, I came across a nearly century-old door in a thrift shop. I bought it just because. Then hurt broke out everywhere. Everyone was going through something. One night after capturing moments, I came home, fatigued by despair, and wept. Not only was our community hurting, but our hurts were dividing us. Around 3 a.m., I laid the the thrift shop door on my dining room table. Since that night, I've poured all of me into the door, and to creating an experience that reminds us that hurt leads to hope. More about through: hurt to hope Every person, family and community in the United States of America hurts. Domestic abuse, terrorism, health issues, discrimination, mass shootings, war and more are hurting us. The intimacy of these complicated pains can be blinding, causing one to think others are not enduring the same or similar struggles. through: hurt to hope — an art-versation — compassionately unpacks America’s hurts, and unites us in a dynamic visual and emotional journey to hope. A nearly century-old door, compelling imagery and hands-on elements enhance the through experience, creating a unique opportunity for conversation. through: hurt to hope debuts August 25-27, 2022, at the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers.
