LYON TOWNSHIP, MI — A small plane crashed into a Lyon Township home on Saturday, killing an area businessman, his wife, and their son, the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan said late Saturday in a statement. The crash, which happened just before 4 p.m. Saturday in the 57000 block of Russet Lane, claimed the lives of David Compo, the plane's pilot and past president of the Home Builders Association, his wife Michele, and their college-age son Dawson. According to the statement, the Compos were returning home from Canton, Georgia, to the Oakland Southwest Airport in New Hudson, just a half-mile from the crash site. "The Compo family has been a significant part of HBA's history for decades and David has been instrumental in helping the association weather the many obstacles HBA faced during 2020," the statement read. The crash also caused significant fire damage to the home. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said in a tweeted statement Saturday that all occupants of the home were able to get out safely. The two-story house suffered extensive damage on both floors along the side and rear, according to the Detroit News. The single-engine Piper PA-24 Comanche was owned by Aircom LLC based in Novi, according to Federal Aviation Administration data obtained by The Detroit News. The company shares an address with Compo Builders, Inc., and both are registered to Compo, who is also president of Compo Builders. The plane was manufactured in 1964. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
