The 19th Annual Scholarship Awards & Gospel Music Celebration will return live on Sunday, August 28, 2022, 5:00 p. m. at the Canton High School Auditorium, 634 Finney Road, in Canton. This celebration is sponsored by the Canton Gospel Music Association (CGMA) along with our local sponsors. Lifetime Achievement Music Awards will be presented to music producer and musician Gerald Nichols and retired band director, producer and musician, Rev. Jessie Primer, Jr. In addition, The Mayor’s Award will be presented by Mayor William Truly to Mrs. Evelyn Jones of WMGO Radio. The highlight of the celebration is the awarding of 13 music scholarships to up and coming musicians. In addition, the audience will get to hear from current and former scholarship recipients as they present musical pieces for your enjoyment. Rev. James Sims serves as Scholarship Chairman. To date, the CGMA has awarded 114 scholarships. Special musical guests include Jessica Poston, Libby Brister, DoxaMuaziq, Jean Ellis & The DB Singers Dr. Jessie and Yuric Primer and friends. Pastor John Woodard, Jr. serves as musical director. “It is fitting that Canton with its rich heritage, deep spiritual roots and strong church affiliations hosts an event to honor one of music’s finest genres,” says Cynthia Goodloe Palmer, Founder and President of the CGMA. Due to COVID-19, masks will be required and social distancing will be observed. Hand sanitizer will be available at the door. A limited amount of tickets will be sold.
