Description
Section 4 of the Walking City Trail spotlights the classic Boston parks, green spaces, and historic sites that many of us know. But even in this superlative part of town, right on Shawmut Peninsula, surprising displays of natural beauty and ingenious park design await. We'll kick off this guided hike at The Dock at Esplanade Park (the Massachusetts Avenue pedestrian ramp to the park is your best bet for access) and from there, we'll spend the morning journeying through the following Boston green spaces: - Esplanade Park - Boston Public Gardens & Common - Auntie Kay and Uncle Frank Chin Park - Rose Kennedy Greenway - Columbus Waterfront Park - Pilot House Park and the Boston Harbor Walk - Paul Revere Mall - Paul Revere Park - City Square Park - Bunker Hill Along the way, we'll stop for food and bathroom breaks, and the hike will conclude at the Bunker Hill Monument—serviced by the MBTA's 92 and 93 buses, and a relatively short walk from the Community College Orange Line station, where Orange Line shuttle buses will be running during the train closure. (Definitely leave extra commuting time if you plan on using public transit to get to the hike rendezvous point!) This final section of the Walking City Trail is the shortest of the four sections and it's almost entirely level, except for the brief climb up Bunker Hill at the end. However, please note that the hiking route does include a small set of stairs as the trail passes through the North End. Capacity for the hike is 25 people. As much as I love the idea of a 50+ person procession of hikers taking over Boston, some of us would definitely get lost. 15 free tickets are available, along with 10 pay-what-you-want donation tickets. If you're able to comfortably make a trail donation, any amount you can manage is appreciated and the proceeds will go toward covering Walking City Trail website maintenance costs and expanding trail resources in the months ahead. This hike is a rain-or-shine event, in the spirit of hiking! Unless we're talking dangerous weather events like extreme heat or a hurricane, in which case the hike will be rescheduled and refunds will be issued to anyone who had already registered for the hike.
