Rooted in the deep tradition of American jazz, fusion, funk, and the rhythms of Brazil, Julian Berkowitz has quickly become one of the area’s most in-demand drummers. As a bandleader, Julian crashes onto the scene leading all-star trios, quartets, and quintets. Joining Julian for this show will be an incredible lineup that includes Justin Mendez on saxophone, Jack Gruber on keys, and Will MoBetta Ledbetter on bass. The son of a Jewish-American father and Brazilian mother, Julian's experience with drums and rhythm began at an early age. He went on to study jazz at George Washington University, with virtuoso Brazilian drummer Alejandro Lucini. Julian has performed and recorded with musicians such as Benny Benack III, Chuck Redd, Corcoran Holt, Mike Pope, Bill Heid, Tedd Baker, Herman Burney, Thad Wilson, Alex Tremblay, and Todd Simon, just to name a few. He’s toured with international artist Michel Nirenberg and Latin jazz artist Debora Galan, on her 2019 East Coast tour. This 60-seat cabaret-style setting offers a private bar, a full restaurant menu, and an incredible listening environment. Over 20 years after opening, Little Havana has become a landmark in South Baltimore, serving brunch, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week year-round. Little Havana continues to be an important part of the fabric of Federal Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods and welcomes The Sonic Lifeline Jazz Series to the Hemingway Room.
