In this workshop you will learn about the painting medium of encaustic wax used by many early cultures and rediscovered in modern times. It was a favorite of the ancient Egyptians.  In the process of creating your own encaustic, multimedia art piece you will learn how to embed papers, fibers, and even small objects into wax to create a collage effect. Photos, as well as other types of markmaking can also be transferred onto the wax, and oil paint sticks or pan pastels can be used to embellish your piece with color and sparkle. I will have papers, fabrics and small objects available for you to use, and you can also bring materials or personal photos from home. Leaves and other small objects from nature walks around the grounds would also make lovely additions to your creation.  You will go home with a finished encaustic art piece between the sizes of 8x 8 and 11x14 that can be hung on a wall, or displayed on a shelf. This is something that can be deeply personal for yourself, embedded with memories and other items with symbolic meaning, or a beautiful art piece that can be given as a gift to someone you love. Time to let your creativity soar! Materials fee: $15 Materials list: You do not need to bring anything with you, as all materials will be provided, however, here is a list of OPTIONAL materials that you could bring. 1. Photographs printed on either matte photo paper, or any non-glossy printer paper, using an ink jet, or laser printer. I would recommend a black and white image, though color can also work. A high quality matte photo paper will likely give you the cleanest transfer, although a less clean transfer (from regular copy paper) can have a lovely antiqued and artistic look to it. Also, if you want your photograph to have the orientation it had when it was taken, you will need to flip the image before printing as it will reverse again when transferred onto your encaustic board. 2. Any non-glossy papers or natural fibers. Things like old book pages, natural fiber papers and fabrics, scrap book papers, etc. 3.  Small or flat objects. If it is a shiny object it must be the size of a button or smaller. Non shiny objects that are flat can be a bit bigger. Natural leaves and other bits of nature also work well.
