Description
What is Safe Zone?Safe Zone training is a national training program which helps to give allies the education and tools to create change and make spaces safer for all queer and trans (QT) students. This training program is a three-plus-part training and begins with Safe Zone 1: QT 101. QT 101 covers topics related to: definitions/terms, privilege, and allyship. This level of training, Safe Zone II: Unpacking QT Intersectionality, will explore the lived experiences of queer and trans individuals living at the intersection of marginalized identities. This training will both look back at the history of QT people through an intersectional lens and also look at where various intersectional movements are now. This training will be looking at queer and trans identities as they intersect with three other identities that we want to focus on primarily (although other social identities will be discussed as well): RaceSocioeconomic ClassDis/ability Safe Zone 3 is designed to think more critically through what it means to be an active ally versus a performative ally. What will I get out of this training? At the end of this training, participants should be able to: Understand what intersectionality means and how this relates to their own lived experiences and the lived experiences of QT individualsReflect on the QT history they are familiar with, and learn new moments and people through QT history in the US from the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 to presentUnderstand specific barriers facing QT people living at the intersections of marginalized identities, along with key people in these movementsIdentify ways in which they can incorporate SafeZone 2 material into active allyshipParticipants should remember to bring their Safe Zone binder from the 1st training which comes equipped with a list of local resources, reference guides for terminology that you might not be familiar with, and serves as a home base for later Safe Zone series trainings as well as a place to keep track of your Queering the Zone (supplemental presentations) materials.
