I don't know if this is necessarily a controversial topic, but I wonder if disbanding political parties altogether would help to unify the nation. There is such a huge political divide in our nation and it's Democrats versus Republicans. But what about people who are middle of the road? Or people who vote conservatively on some measures and liberally on others? I tend to believe that most people are rational and vote for candidates whose beliefs align with their own and not simply because the candidates are affiliated with a certain political party. If there are no parties, then the candidates can be selected solely on their merit.
