Creative Writing for Teens and Pre-Teens

Experienced teacher and published writer with a BA and MFA in writing from Columbia University offering creative writing lessons to middle-school and high-school students. Classes are adaptable to individual needs and can be held in-person, at home, school, cafes, parks, other outdoor venues throughout the Bay Area, or virtually. Classes work best when held once a week for two hours. Students can join a general group of 3-6 students, or come with their own group of students from their school or network. Semester-long course combines a seminar and workshop model to cover a variety of writing styles and genres. At end of course, students will have a portfolio of writing samples, useful for continued progress and/or to supplement college applications. Courses can include: - Poetry, fiction, and nonfiction workshops with peer-driven feedback - Writing prompts and creative, generative activities - Lessons in critique, criticism, constructive feedback, and the importance of revision - Academic writing and revision - College, fellowship, and other application-based writing - Readings and education about contemporary literature and publishing industry - Site visits of literary or generative importance About the teacher: - Bay Area native - Multi-racial and queer woman dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion - Experienced teacher at Columbia University’s Summer Program for High School Students - BA and MFA in nonfiction creative writing from Columbia University - Professional artist and agented writer, published in respected literary journals - Former director of prestigious and national literary awards program - Available for one-on-one tutoring and mentorship - Willing to travel to hold in-person courses throughout the Bay Area For more information and to discuss, please email via the Craigslist address.
