Description
Good with dogs and kids! If you are interested in Artemis, go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Artemis is a 4-5 year old Newfie who we rescued from a shelter along with her four gorgeous babies (all of whom have been adopted!). She is the definition of a gentle giant. She weighs around 120 lbs! She's been in foster care with us for about a month now. Here is the report from her foster home. When Artemis first arrived, she didn't seem very nervous but instead curious over all the new scents. She walked the entire property smelling every corner, piece of furniture, and every plant. As we set up her kennel first thing, she knows "her" place in the house that quickly became the safe zone for her. Now that she's adjusted to the house, we've found that Artemis holds many personalities. If you're sitting on the couch or laying on the bed, she will be right there next to you (if not on top of you). She's definitely a cuddler every chance she gets! At night, she will take up the whole bed if you let her. If you stop petting her, she will paw at you to get more attention. During the daytime, she's good with both being on her own or being with people. Generally, she will nap and entertain herself in whichever room most people are. She does have some spurts of energy after eating, but for the most part she is pretty mellow and will sleep a lot. She can be scared of loud noises such as fireworks or gunshots on the TV. Artemis' daily routine includes waking up somewhere between 6 and 7 am. She will go outside to go potty, then come back inside to continue sleeping. Breakfast is around 9 am (give or take 30 minutes). After breakfast, she's her most active and will play and run around for about half an hour outside (with a potty break sometime in there). Around 11 am, she's napping the day away. She may get up and want some personal attention throughout the day, but for the most part she is fine entertaining herself with a chew toy or sunning outside. We normally leave the door open so she can go in and out as she pleases. Dinner is around 6 pm. After dinner, she can be quite active again for an hour. She will normally nap afterwards. When we go to bed, she loves to sleep on the bed with us. She'll be happy to stay there all night, but 11 pm we put her back in her kennel for the night. We currently have two other Newfoundlands and one Chihuahua. Artemis is great at playing with the Newfoundlands and they will follow each other around the yard, play with toys together, or just wrestle together. Artemis is interested in the Chihuahua and sometimes gets in his face (which he isn't fond of), but is not aggressive. They do not directly play with each other, but they are perfectly fine coexisting! Like most other Newfoundlands, Artemis wrestles a lot. My Newfoundlands often play like this so they are happy to wrestle with Artemis, but many other dogs can get scared (particularly due to her size). Because of Artemis' size and her tendency to sit on top of people (hehe), she's best suited to a home without any small children. Artemis is both a playful pup and a couch potato. She will get zoomies pretty regularly and will wrestle and play with toys very strongly for an hour, then she'll be a lounger for 5 or 6 hours at a time. Artemis is crate-trained and uses her crate as "her" room. We generally leave the door open for her to go in and out. She knows to go potty on the grass! Artemis is not a regular barker and is pretty quiet for the most part! Artemis does love to chew at times, but she only chews on nylabones and other "super chewer" toys. The best home for Artemis would be a family who is used to large dogs. She does like to have a lot of room to run (or another dog to wrestle with as a substitute). She can also play rough with some body slams, so the owners need to be prepared to handle a large 100+ lb dog. Artemis would really love someone who can give her loads of attention at night. She does love to sit on furniture and be on the bed and can be a messy eater/drinker, so it's important that that's all allowed in the house! As her hair grows longer, she will need regular brushing every day to help deter mats. As I've always been a fan of Newfoundlands, I can say that Artemis is the most snuggly Newfoundland I've ever met! Most Newfies will snuggle for a maximum of 5 minutes at a time, but Artemis is in it for the long haul. She's the perfect mix of being independent and affectionate. She's perfect for any home that may be home all day or need to work and be out of the house (as long as she gets her cuddles at night!). Artemis is only an option for a home that has owned a dog in the last 5 years. Prior large breed dog experience is highly recommended. She's only an option for children over the age of 10 due to her size.
