Description

Sustainable Building Week networking is too much fun to keep it once a year. We’ll supply the drinks, light snacks, and a few topics of discussion. Bring your vaccinated self and be reminded of how much inspiration and business occurs when we talk face to face. On August 9th, we welcome Vinh Mason (Senior Climate Policy Advisor) from the City of Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability(BPS) who will introduce the Climate and Health Standards to decarbonize Portland’s existing commercial and multifamily residential buildings by 2050 while improving the health and climate resiliency of rental housing. From April to June of this year, BPS hosted stakeholder working groups to refine a policy concept. A draft ordinance proposal is planned for public comment later this Fall. At the August Sustainable Building Monthly meeting, Vinh Mason/BPS will share an introduction to the proposed standards and next steps to get involved. Vinh Mason develops strategies to reduce carbon emissions while advancing racial equity. He collaborates with local climate justice leaders to develop and prioritize anti-displacement policies that will decarbonize Portland’s building sector by 2050. Prior to joining the City, Vinh was an environmental science professor at two Portland colleges where he taught courses on climate change and sustainable solutions. He holds a BS in chemical and environmental engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara and an MS in Environmental Management from Portland State University. Vinh is an NBI Senior Fellow and LEED Green Associate. When away from work, he loves to explore hidden corners of the Pacific Northwest by foot, paddle and bicycle. All sustainability friends are invited whether you’re in design, construction, academia, government, business, manufacturing, or something else. All are welcome because it will take all of us to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Masks are encouraged but not required in the well-ventilated, often open air “decony” where people will be enjoying alcohol. COVID vaccination is required.
