Looking for a fresh way to flex those theatre muscles? Theatre@First is auditioning for an original theatrical piece like nothing you've seen before.
Written and directed by Michael Anderson, this show provides a truly unique opportunity for actors! Double Bill is a meta-Shakespeare showcase of short scenes, in two parts. We are looking for a diverse cast of 10-12 actors to devise and perform new material collaboratively. Michael Anderson is the general impresario, but each cast member is welcome to contribute. We especially need the voices of actors of color, women, and queer folks who care about Shakespeare.
As always, auditions are by appointment only, so get signed up today!
ABOUT THE SHOW
The first half, Loose Canon, is a series of mashups blurring iconic Shakespeare scenes into modern works derived from them. For example, Macbeth-Lady M gradually morphs into the opening diner scene of Pulp Fiction; Hamlet-Gertrude dissolves in and out with Stanley-Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire. We want this to be hilarious but insightful, to show how Shakespeare’s DNA replicates inside modern culture.
The second half, O Intolerable! will be scenes on the collision of Shakespeare’s 16th Century politics with modern progressive values. This show projects a radical leftist, inclusive, anti-authoritarian take on how to inhabit the Plays joyfully despite the medieval Euro-male-supremacy woven into them. What does it mean to acknowledge indigenous land, but then segue into the Caliban scenes in The Tempest? Can we really rationalize Taming of the Shrew as an ironic feminist play, or Merchant of Venice as an anti-anti-Semitic play? Can we pretend that Coriolanus isn’t authoritarian propaganda?
